How to Choose the Correct Dining Table

How to Choose the correct Dining Table - 6 Considerations

So, its time to upgrade your existing Kitchen or Dining Room Table and chairs, maybe you have just redecorated your dining space, perhaps recently moved in to a new home, or your existing furniture just does not cut it any more, especially if you are hosting over the festive period. If so, before you rush out to buy a dining suite there are some things you might need to consider.

In the heart of every home, the dining table stands as a symbol of togetherness, a stage for shared meals, laughter, and cherished memories. Whether you are hosting a glamorous dinner party or enjoying a cozy family breakfast, selecting the right dining table is paramount. Let us be your guide on this journey to find the perfect balance between entertaining allure and everyday functionality.

6 points to Consider

  1.     What am I using my Dining Table for?

Now, this is not as daft a question to ask yourself as first may seem.  Yes, you want a table for dining, but with the changes in the world post pandemic more and more of us work from home. Do you have a designated home Office space? Or will your Dining table double up as a work space on the times you work from Home?

If so then you need to consider….

  1.  Do you have limited space?

This is a big consideration. Space availability is prime in your choice of table…should you choose a round, or square or rectangular table? Also consider the base of the table. A pedestal or rounded base to your table gives the visual of…space. A rectangular or square table can box off the corners from the table edges giving a solid cube look. Further, choosing a Glass Dining Table top will convey light and space over a solid finish and help to visually open up a small space.

A round table can create a more social setting and is a little easier in accommodating an extra diner. By its very nature a round table can solve the issue of ‘bashing elbows’ when eating as the natural curve of the table takes away the side-by-side arrangement. Rounded tables are great for maximising any space. Rounded tables tend to have rounded bases (see above)

A square table can fit perfectly in a corner, freeing up floor space and a rectangular table will fit in with any room scheme. The Rectangular table is more formal in its setting, and is ideal if your dining area has a more traditional décor. You can modernise the feel by combining these tables with benches rather than the traditional chair, creating that adaptable furnishing v space solution.

        3.            Current (or intended) décor style theme

Is your dining space a formal affair, or are we talking minimalist?  Do you have a Traditional period style, or are you going for the Scandinavian look? Pick the wrong dining table and the overall feel of the room will be compromised. Something will always feel out of kilter and ‘not quite right’ For example You do not want to be picking a traditional Antique English Mahogany dining table and chairs to go into a Japanese inspired black and white minimalist room.

Want to create your theme? Your choice of table is an impact point. Make it part of the style and overall feel of the room, there are plenty of choices out there, and using your Dining requirements, finding the Dining Table, and then working back can drive your room theme.

          4.                         Do You Entertain frequently?

Maybe not. However, combined with point 2 you do not want to be squeezing an 8-seat table into a small room when you only entertain to that level twice a year.  Consider a table that can extend or has additional leaves that you can add. However, do make sure that if you fully extend the table… it does fit. There is nothing worse than your guests arriving for your soiree and upon sitting down, one or two of them are squashed up against a wall or blocking the route to a kitchen door needed by the host/hostess.

For everyday use consider the size of your family… and if fits, upsize by 2. If you are a family of 4, choose a table that can seat 6, family of 6… choose an 8 seat. etc.   The reason for this is that you will appreciate the extra space on a daily use basis and avoid the crush of all squeezing in at meal times.

          5.                                      Budget

Quality need not break the bank. Set a realistic budget that aligns with your expectations and explore options within that range. Remember, investing in a durable, timeless piece pays off in the long run. Look for promotions, discounts, or consider second-hand options to find the perfect table without compromising on quality. However, do remember the tenet of life:  “buy cheap, buy twice” A Quality piece of furniture will last for years. Poor quality will see the joints splitting, a square table becoming loose and angled and any veneer finish lifting or staining.

           6.                                   Material

The material of your dining table sets the tone for both style and durability. Solid wood exudes timeless elegance and warmth, while glass tables bring a touch of modern sophistication. For a blend of aesthetics and sturdiness, consider a sturdy metal or marble base. Each material has its unique charm; choose one that resonates with your taste, decor and lifestyle.
